Stethoscopes are great for assessing heart, lung and bowel sounds of newborn puppies. Because of puppies’ small size, a pediatric or neonate stethoscope is recommended. A larger diaphragm will pick up too many other sounds. For instance, if you listen for a heart beat, you will pick up lung and bowel sounds simultaneously. Because of this, it is difficult to distinguish the sounds from each other. In puppies, the heartbeat is usually found between the 5th and 6th ribs.
