Description
Condy's Crystals or Potassium Permanganate (chemical formula KMnO4) is used to stop bleeding quickly and works as an antiseptic. Condy's Crystals are frequently utilised in dew claw removal and bleeding quicks, although they also have many other uses in general healthcare.
The product is supplied in a solid amber glass vial with a vial tamper-proof (child-resistant) cap.
Condy's Crystals / Potassium Permanganate cannot be shipped by air or express post as it is a potent oxidising agent.
Reported Uses:
- Dampen the end of a cotton bud for direct application to avoid staining of fingers and nails.
- A potassium permanganate solution of 1 in 1,000 may be used as wet soaks to blistering wounds such as ulcers and abscesses. Strips of cotton or gauze are soaked in the solution and then wrapped around the affected area for 20–30 minutes. The astringent action of Condy's Crystals helps dry out blisters and prepare wounds for other treatments.
- Twice daily baths for two days help to dry out the weeping sores and soothe eczema.
- Use a 1% solution (1 in 100) to treat fungal infections such as athlete's foot.
Cautions:
- Potassium permanganate crystals and concentrated solutions are caustic and can burn the skin.
- Even fairly dilute solutions can irritate skin, and repeated use may cause burns. If redness or irritation continues, notify your vet or doctor.
- When preparing solutions, ensure that the crystals or tablets are fully dissolved in water before use.
- Potassium permanganate soaks are not suitable for dry skin conditions.
- Condy's Crystals will leave a brown stain on the skin, nails and surfaces.
